John Richard Matheis (also known as J. Richard Matheis and as Ric Matheis), of Overland Park, Kansas, a stockbroker formerly registered with Union Capital Company, has been barred from associating with any Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) member in any capacity because he failed to testify in an investigation into his potential sales practice violations during the time that he was associated with Union Capital Company. Letter of Acceptance, Waiver, and Consent No. 2021072000901 (Aug. 24, 2023).

According to the AWC, on July 31, 2023, FINRA asked Matheis to appear before investigators to provide testimony. Matheis, through his lawyer, communicated on August 8, 2023, that he had received the request but would not be participating. By refusing to comply, Matheis violated FINRA Rules 2010 and 8210.

FINRA Public Disclosure also shows that on October 31, 2001, a customer filed an investment related complaint involving Matheis’ conduct in which the customer sought compensatory damages based upon allegations that Matheis provided unsuitable advice regarding a variable universal life insurance policy when he was associated with VSR Financial Services Inc.

On June 23, 2021, a customer filed an investment related complaint involving Matheis’ conduct in which the customer requested $15,000.00 in damages upon allegations that Matheis made unsuitable recommendations of Hospitality Investors Trust Inc. REIT during the time that he was associated with Berthel Fisher Company Financial Services.
